US president Barack Obama arrived in Afghanistan for a surprise visit on Sunday, according to a report by Peter Spiegel, Wall Street Journal correspondent.
For security reasons, the trip had been kept secret.
Even the country's president, Hamid Karzai, was only notified an hour before he had to greet Obama at his palace.
The American leader has invited his counterpart to visit the US in May this year.
Obama also addressed American troops stationed in Afghanistan with a speech thanking them for their efforts far from home.
This is his first visit since he took office, inheriting the country's eight-year long conflict.
